Being a paediatric dentist, we are often asked by the parents about how to choose the right toothbrush for their child? Considering that this is one of the primary needs, we have decided to discuss with you some tips that would help you find a safe toothbrush for your kids. If you end up choosing the wrong toothbrush, it might cause more damage than benefits. When it comes to buying a kid’s toothbrush, you must keep in mind several different factors like age, ability, & dental health. Below, we have some guidelines for you on choosing the right toothbrush for your kid.

General Tips on Selecting The Right Toothbrush For Your Kid

Irrespective of how old your child is, the one thing that you need to keep in mind while buying a toothbrush is that it should be very easy and handy to use. The toothbrush needs to fit the child’s mouth comfortably. In addition to the size, another important thing to keep in mind is the bristles. Choosing a brush with soft bristles with rounded polished ends is always a good idea. When it comes to picking toothbrushes, it is much more convenient for you to let your kid choose the colour, pattern, and design as per their liking.

Let’s discuss these factors one by one.

  1. Size of the toothbrush – The first thing to consider while shopping for a toothbrush for your kid is the size. One size does not fit all. Your little one’s toothbrush must fit his or her mouth as comfortably as possible. A toothbrush with a small brush head is much more suitable for kids than the one with a large head.
  2. Bristles of the toothbrush – Bristles of a kid’s toothbrush must be soft. Buying a hard-bristled toothbrush will cause damage to your child’s gums and teeth. So, always pick the one toothbrush that has soft bristles.
  3. Manual or Powered? There are some kids who are very fond of powered toothbrushes but at the same time, there are some who actually don’t find them comfortable to use. For the kids with braces, having an electric or powered toothbrush is a great solution. This would help them reach even the hardest to reach places in the kid’s mouths.

If not selected carefully, the toothbrush can actually cause severe damage to your kid’s gums and teeth. As per the American Dental Association, one should always choose a toothbrush that your kid would use. Buying a toothbrush that will end up rotting in a stand is pointless. This is the reason why we recommend that you take your kid along with you when shopping for a toothbrush.
